Hello September

Personal

Technically, astronomical Autumn begins on September 23rd. We’re weeks away from the actual start of Fall, but with the kids back to school, the pool closed, and the beach chairs packed away it sure feels like Fall is close by. Even the sunset is creeping into the 7pm hour. Today is September 1, and this day is becoming the unofficial start to all things Fall. This morning we’re bracing ourselves for all things pumpkin to be stocked on the grocery store shelves, and researching some DIY blanket scarf projects. Not gonna lie… Betty is less than thrilled. Summer is her favorite. Maggie however already has her flannel shirts and boots ready to go. Fall is her favorite.

With this early welcoming of all things autumnal, we decided to look back at our Summer bucket list, and daydream about some things we’d like to fit into our already packed Fall calendar. We’ll start with our Summer Bucket List…

  • Pick and eat a bushel of crabs – check!
  • Have a few Sunday dinners at Maw Maw’s with the whole family – check!
  • Teach Sweet Cheeks how to swim – We paid for swim lessons, he splashed around, calling this a check 😉
  • Go to at least a couple Friday Night Concerts in La Plata – Just two so far, but thankfully they run through September. Hopefully we can fit one more in.
  • Sit on the front steps and eat popsicles – Lots! This was one of our favorite parts of summer!
  • Watch the fireworks – It may not have been the Fair Grounds, but we did get to see the fireworks on the 4th!
  • Have a picnic – Technically we ate a lot of lunches on the floor in the living room while Chubby Cheeks played, so yes.
  • Stay up late, sleep in even later – We had a chance to do this at the beach a few times, and it was great!
  • Grill – Didn’t make it to grill this year, but if we’re being honest standing in front of a burning grill in 90 degree weather is no fun.
  • Play corn hole and eat an entire watermelon – Watermelon yes, corn hole no.
  • Run through the sprinkler (or let Sweet Cheeks attack us with it) – Yes and yes.
  • Sip cold beer on the deck, at night, under cafe lights – Beer for sure, deck yes, cafe lights no. Those never made it up this year.
  • Go to a baseball game, or two – Sweet Cheeks and his Daddy went to a couple games! We stayed home and played with the baby 😉 We’re more football people.
  • Watch a little too much TV – Sweet Cheeks watched the same movie about 5 times while we were at the beach, late at night after he couldn’t stay in the sand anymore. So yeah, awesome parenting for the win!
  • Watch the sunrise over the ocean, and wake Sweet Cheeks up to see it – We both got up twice to see the sun rise over the ocean and it was glorious. Sweet Cheeks was not available as he was sleeping and not interested in being awake. But we did manage to get John Boy to join us one morning, so that was great!

And now for a little Fall bucket listing…

  • Go “apple picking”, and in reality take photos in the apple orchard and buy a bucket of apples from the farm stand
  • Take the boys to the county fair, see the animals and eat apple dumplings
  • Make some blanket scarves to wear on chilly engagement sessions
  • Play in the fields at Jefferson Patterson Park with pretty orange and red trees in the background
  • Let dinner cook in the crock pot all day, most days
  • More Sunday dinners at Maw Maws
  • Pumpkin patch!
  • Plan one heck of a Halloween party (it’s a Saturday this year ya’ll)
  • Carve a lot of jack o lanterns
  • Bake as many yummy pumpkin treats as humanly possible
  • JOHN AND MANDY’S WEDDING!!!
  • Let the boys play in a pile of leaves, no matter how much it makes their mother’s skin crawl
  • Enjoy Thanksgiving, and be as thankful as ever
  • Try very hard to wait until after Thanksgiving to even think about Christmas or listen to Christmas music

We hope you all had a fantastic Summer, and we hope this Fall treats you just as well.
