A tour of Historic Southern Maryland wedding venues

Tips and Tricks

One of the blessings we’ve come into while navigating this career in the wedding industry, is the opportunity to photograph some incredible historic venues. Our roots run deep in Charles County and Southern Maryland as a whole is our home. We’re country girls at heart and the depth of historic elements in these small towns is much greater than most of us realize. While having the chances to shoot at such beautiful venues, we also have the good luck to run into the fine folks who maintain these properties. So far this year we’ve been lucky enough to work with the majority of the historic wedding venues in Southern Maryland, and the event coordinators who make our experiences effortless deserve a little shout out. So earlier this week, we decided to spend the day out of our offices and take a little tour around Southern Maryland. Along the way we stopped off at some of our most favorite wedding venues in the area and brought along some goodies for their care takers and coordinators, to say thank you for all the assistance they’ve provided us when we’ve worked with them.

We started off at Woodlawn Farm in Ridge, MD. This venue is one of the best places to host a wedding… anywhere. Wedding days always go so perfectly and from a photography perspective, you can’t go wrong. It even has a growing winery!

Next we headed over to Brome Howard Inn. This is another venue that has it all. Like Woodlawn, Brome Howard Inn can host your entire wedding party for the length of your wedding weekend. It’s another venue we get giddy about!

Just down the road is the State House in Historic St. Mary’s City. This property’s historical elements are outstanding. It’s grand, elegant, and provides a waterfront view for your wedding. The grounds are extensive and they provide a lot of options for photos. We love the State House.

Greenwell State Park was the next stop on our trip. The beautiful white house sits hidden between the shade and quite of some very old and equally beautiful trees. The water runs behind the house, a stunning ceremony garden is just a short walk from the house, and the lawn along the water is a perfect spot for a big white reception tent. The horse barns and white fencing that sit in the distance are a gorgeous backdrop.

Just up the road from Greenwell we made our last stop of the day, and visited with the ladies of Sotterley Plantation. This location is by far the largest in the group with several different rooms, barns, buildings, and ceremony locations to choose from. The rolling hills along the water, the gardens, and the plantation houses are all divine. We love Sotterley weddings!

So for those of you interested in a historic venue in Southern Maryland for your wedding day, check out any of our favorites! You can’t go wrong with any of them! Happy Friday!
