As soon as a wedding date is secured in our calendar, we immediately start talking with the new couple about possible engagement session dates. Because we do engagement sessions for every couple we work with, our engagement session dates fill just as quickly as our wedding dates. We want to make sure everyone has as much time to plan for their session as possible, and hopefully we’re able to offer session dates during the time frame everyone is hoping for. Most of the time, couples want a Fall or Spring engagement session. These seasons are clearly the top favorites for engagement sessions, with Fall taking the win. But there are still plenty of engagement sessions happening in the Summer, and even a few in the Winter!
We’re here today to highlight the potential beauty in any season, no matter when you end up scheduling your engagement session! So if you don’t want to wait until what you think is “the best time” for engagement photos, you certainly don’t have to! Anytime is great!
SPRING
Ahhh… birds are chirping, the ground is becoming green, flowers are blooming and trees are budding with fluffly white blossoms. This is a great time of year because it’s not too hot, and not too cold. Choosing a garden area for photos, or even places in the city with gorgeous trees and sidewalks (Old Town, Cherry Blossoms) is a great backdrop. Keep in mind, it tends to rain a lot in the Spring and the potential for a romantic rainy session is higher in this season. If you’re prone to allergies, you might want to rethink a Spring session, since the pollen could be a problem.
SUMMER
There’s nothing like a summer sunset. They seem to last longer, glow brighter, and just photograph so well. Summer engagement sessions have the luxury of happening much later in the evening, when the sun is going down. If you love the water, this is a great season to get out there on the beaches. Your skin has a healthy glow thanks to a little time outside, and who isn’t more relaxed during the slower paced weeks of Summer? We will of course have to do the session when the temperatures are rather high, but we take plenty of water breaks and wait to start the sessions until the heat of the day has passed. The occasional thunderstorm may interrupt plans but we have to watch the weather no matter the season.
FALL
Oh Fall, how we love you. There’s something about red and orange leaves falling around a couple, cuddled up in the crisp air. Pumpkin Spice Latte in hand. Yes, we know. Fall is awesome. We love it too! And we understand why so many couples love the Fall as their season for engagement photos. Beware, these dates fill first, and those gorgeous leaves don’t always turn out to be so gorgeous. The DC/Southern Maryland areas get some colorful foliage, let’s face it… we don’t get anything like New England color. City streets with shorter trees are great options to try and get in that Fall color for these sessions!
WINTER
The most underrated season of them all, cold and blustery winter. It’s not often we run into couples who want a snuggly Winter engagement session but when we do, we get excited! There’s something incredibly romantic about snow, hot chocolate, and mittens that make our creative hearts go pitter patter. During the cold months, it’s best to keep sessions in an urban setting since the trees branches will be bare. BUT, if you end up getting snow on the ground, an open field with bright, white snow can be gorgeous! The only downfall to Winter sessions, yes it’s going to be cold. Worth it though!
