A Day In The Life :: Wedding Wardrobe

Behind the scenes

Over the years, we’ve tried out several different styles of outfits for shooting weddings. There’s a lot to think about when choosing what you’re going to wear to a wedding as a photographer. How does our appearance reflect back onto our brand? Do we look professional, too casual, too rigid? Can we move in this outfit? Can we kneel down for small detail photos and climb onto chairs for portraits or during the reception? Are we going to be tugging at these clothes all day, constantly having to readjust?

Dresses aren’t bad, but we always have to wear bike shorts underneath as a precaution against flashing guests while we kneel, climb or even lay on the ground (yes these are all things we do). Pencil skirts are not something we’ve ever enjoyed wearing on a regular, sit in a chair and just look pretty, basis so wearing them while shooting is just not an option. Finally we had to realize and accept, that the best wedding wardrobe for our personal style, body types and method of shooting is the classic black trouser. Once we gave in and just started wearing what worked for us, dressing for weddings become a lot easier and a lot more fun!

In the spring and summer, a cropped black pant is perfect. It maintains a professional look, but lets us dress for the warmer weather since most weddings we shoot require a lot of time outside. We can easily wear comfy black flats with them, and the dark color of the pants lets us get away with any stains we might pick up while shooting throughout the day (we seriously sit on the floor a lot). Finding a pair of pants that are made from a sturdy, stretchy material is key. We need them to stretch and move with us, but not stretch out.

The fun comes in when we get to pair with them a colorful blouse. Long sleeves for cooler weather, short sleeves when it’s warm. Any dressy blouse will usually work for us. We do try to find sturdy material or buy very inexpensive tops for our wedding wardrobe. Because we wear holdfast camera holsters over our shoulders, the shoulders and backs of our shirts can get really worn down from the straps. Sometimes we end up with tears or separated seams after just a few wears. Typically, we go through tops pretty quickly.

So there you have it. Our go to wedding photographer outfit!
