After 3 years of a very plain blog and the two of us saying “we’ve gotta get the blog taken care of” we finally did it. We had the blog designed by a professional and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome. For years now we’ve continued to fool ourselves into thinking we could design it on our own. We’d each take turns messing around in WordPress trying to make something out of nothing, but we had no idea what we were doing. Then it hit us… we’re photographers, not designers.
The brand of Birds of a Feather Photography deserved a professional to come in and take over. When we finally found a designer we loved, we hired her, told her what we wanted, then LET GO. That’s the key folks… just let it go. Trust the professional you’ve hired, step back, and let them be awesome.
Our designer came back with a first draft that we fell in love with immediately. It had everything we wanted, things we didn’t realize we wanted, and nothing we didn’t. She heard us, she got us, she took us to a better place than we could have figured out on our own. The blog is absolutely perfect, and is better than we imagined. Clean, chic, pretty and light. The watercolor splashes of blue that match our studio walls are just perfect. The logo is probably our favorite part. It is so similar to our main logo, but it has a more relaxed feel which the blog should be, relaxed and fun. We’re just so happy with it, we can’t stand it!
It’s funny. We talk to our couples a lot about letting go, and now we agree with that mindset even more. Couples should hire a wedding planner and stylist for their expertise. They should give them direction, but also the freedom to work their magic and do what they’ve been hired to do. Let your planner surprise you with ideas she has, that you didn’t think of. When you hire an awesome DJ, don’t give him too many “must play” songs or request lists. That limits what he/she can do to keep the dance floor packed. A great DJ will know when and how to phase into the next song, so give them room to do their job well. Of course this applies to photography too. If you’ve invested so much of your wedding budget into a photographer you love… trust them. Step back, put the Pinterest board down and walk away from it slowly. Give your photographers freedom to get creative on your wedding day, living and feeling the moments as they are happening. That’s when you’ll get breathtaking photos. Trusting your vendors, and letting go, will give you an amazing wedding experience. We promise. And we too have learned this lesson when working with our designer. It’s always a good plan to hire the best, and let them do their best.
