Something new we wanted to do this year while we were reviewing our 2014 weddings, was to look back at some “trends” we noticed. There are plenty of blogs and magazines that will tell you what the real trends are, what to wear, what not to wear. Pantone will tell you what color to incorporate on a yearly basis, and Martha herself is always up for the next big and new wedding idea. But these things are just what we saw, and what we happened to love. So take a look through some of the wedding details we noticed throughout 2014!
Colors: Pinks, Peaches, and Corals
It was hard to narrow down to just one color we saw trending this year, but that’s because Brides were pulling shades from the pink to peach spectrum. Sometimes a pale blush pink, other times a bright coral, all of theses feminine shades were so fun to see this year. The best part was seeing the combinations of two or more of these shades thrown together for a perfect wedding palate. It also meant we got to see one of our favorite flowers, the peony, show up a lot! A shade of pink was the most popular bridesmaids choice all year long…
Dresses: Sleeves!
Straying from the always popular look of a strapless dress, many Brides this year went with gowns that had something extra. We saw a lot of non-strapless dresses this year, especially those embellished with cap sleeves, long sleeves, asymmetrical straps, ruffles, lace necklines and beading. These extra details on a wedding dress were so fun to photograph. We hope to see more of this trend in 2015…
Bouquets: Big and beautiful
We noticed the bouquets this year were incredibly full, jam packed with gorgeous stems and constructed to be a focal point. The floral designers out did themselves this year, and we couldn’t get enough of these bountiful bouquets…
The Guys: Relaxed and Casual
We’ll never grow tired of a classic and perfectly tailored tux, but it was nice to see the guys this year loosen things up. Many Grooms chose to go with a more casual look for their wedding day attire, and we think it did a great job keeping the guys relaxed, fun and easy going…
Cocktail Hour: Extended and Playful
Couples this year, especially those who had weddings in the warmer months, chose to extend the length of their cocktail hours. We saw this quite a bit actually, and we really fell in love with the idea. A traditional Cocktail “Hour” is really only about 45 minutes. It begins the moment the first guest arrives to the venue or to the cocktail hour space. From there, it takes time for the entire guest list to trickle in, grab a drink and a plate of food. In what feels like no time, your coordinator starts to usher guests to the dinner space to give plenty of time for everyone to find their seats before the big entrance. So often this really fun and relaxed time of the day is rushed, and you miss out on the chance to mingle with your guests and snack on the amazing food you chose! So couples are extending these portions of the day to make them last longer, and let guests really sink in and enjoy. Lawn games are a big hit and give your guests something to do while they enjoy the start of the evening. This is probably our favorite trend seen this year! Plus… it gives couples more time for photos, and we always appreciate that!
The Food: Yummy and Laid Back
We’ve all been there. A glamorous wedding with details to the 9’s. Then the plated meal comes out, well intentioned, but underwhelming. Sometimes the traditional, plated meals don’t always taste as amazing as they look, leaving guests looking forward to a stop at McDonalds on the way home. This year we saw a lot of couples put a priority on the food they serve, adding to the experience of their entire day. In most cases, that meant serving food that was filling, tasted amazing, and wasn’t too stuffy. Yes, you can serve BBQ and coleslaw at your elegant and gorgeous wedding. The combination of comfort foods against classic wedding venues/themes was awesome to see. Bacon, eggs and grits for a brunch wedding? Oh yes… sign us up! Stuffed ham sandwiches? Now you’re talking 😉
So there you have it, the things we saw this year that caught our eye, and made us say “if we could do it again, we’d do it like this”. Hope this was a fun post to look through! It was for us!
