This might actually be a question we get asked more than any other. “What are those straps you’re wearing?” Guests at weddings will even come up to us and ask us about our camera holsters! They are pretty cool looking. And we admit, before we have any cameras hanging from them, they kind of look like detective gun holsters or something super bad ass like that. In fact, they’re just our method of carrying and shooting with two camera bodies/lenses at a time. We mentioned these beauties on the blog last year, but they’re always such a hit we figured it wouldn’t hurt to share this info again. We’ve even gotten emails from other photographers asking about our holsters! They’ve been life savers for us, and we couldn’t imagine shooting a wedding without them. So we’re happy to share!
We wear the Holdfast Moneymaker camera strap system. You can order several different colors and varieties of leather from the company directly. They last forever. They support our cameras, and they are so easy to use.
On a typical wedding day we begin using our cameras hand held, one at a time in the bridal suite. During detail photos Maggie is usually sitting on the ground and it’s not convenient to have two camera bodies swinging towards the floor when you’re kneeling. Betty is typically with the girls in a quiet but tight space so only one camera is necessary. When we leave for the church or portraits, that’s when we get our holsters on and load them up with our cameras. We each shoot with two cameras throughout the portraits, ceremony, additional portraits, and the first half of the reception. When all that’s left at the end of the night is dancing, we go down to just one camera each. Holdfast also makes a great wrist strap for single camera shooting, and that’s what we’ll use for this portion of the day, when we’re down to just one camera body.
There you have it! The answer to the “what are those things you’re wearing?” question 😉
