This time of year it’s cold. Let’s be real, getting outside in blustery weather isn’t exactly the MOST fun we’ll ever have but it doesn’t stop us from getting out there and photographing styled shoots, weddings, or engagement sessions. Actually… a lot of couples we work with like the idea of a bundled up kind of engagement session, fully embracing the chilly weather. Winter can be beautiful, and there is nothing quite like one of winter’s sunsets. So while most couples choose to get married and have their engagement sessions during the Spring, Summer and Fall… there are a few who choose a Winter session and hope for snow, or at least one of those gorgeous sunsets.
Deciding what to wear for a Winter engagement session can be tough. You want to look awesome. You don’t want to freeze your tushes off. Two opposing ideas at first glance, but we thought we’d throw together a few outfit ideas that would work really well for a cold weather engagement session. Here’s what we came up with (please keep in mind we are NOT fashion people).
This one is super casual, laid back style with lots of layers and accessories to keep you warm and add variety to your looks.Wear the coat/vests for some shots, take them off for others. Same goes for the knit hats. An outfit like this would work well in any setting, urban or rustic.
A little more put together, this outfit pairing seems a little more thought out. The coordinating color idea is nice if you plan on using photos for your save-the-date cards. Decide to wear your wedding colors and bam… your save-the-dates will match the entire wedding color theme 😉 And even if you aren’t into matching colors or thinking that far in advance, a bright and bold color will add a lot of dimension to your Winter session. The trees and landscapes are bare this time of year so you’ll want to add color in another way. Your clothing is a great way to do that in the Winter.
When the Polar Vortex comes to town during your engagement session, feel free to actually bundle up and stay as warm as you can. A couple strolling along a city street wearing nice, tailored coats is in our opinion is one of the most classic winter images. Again, a bold color to bring some brightness into the photos is key. Throw in some classic accessories and dress this outfit up a bit. This would be best suited for a downtown engagement session location.
This last one is probably our most favorite. Assuming the weather is just warm enough to skip the heavy coats, chunky knit sweaters and jeans is an awesome and versatile look. This style looks like a casual date night outfit and we love that. No need to “match” here, just make sure you don’t have too many competing colors and you’ll be set! Most couples would be really comfortable in a look like this, and comfort is key!
