Ask Anything :: our style

Ask Anything

This morning as we check email, edit photos, update invoices, and run after the boys from Maggie’s house… we’re in yoga pants. If we did have a uniform, it would be yoga pants and ocean city surf shop tee shirts. But when it’s time for a wedding, we dress the way we would want our own photographers to dress if it were our wedding day. Our goal is to dress like a guest, blending right in with the crowd. We like to look professional and stylish, but we also have to remember that our job may require that we stand on a chair or kneel on the ground. Classic pieces with clean lines, neutral colors, and simple accessories are the name of the game. We don’t want to make a lot of noise as we tip toe through the church during a ceremony, so lots of noisy jewelry or clicky heels are a no no. As photographers, we are extremely visible when we’re working on a wedding day. Guests, the bridal party, the family of the couple, other vendors, and potential clients have their eyes on us all day. It’s so important for photographers to dress in a way that reflects their brand, their level of professionalism, and their personal sense of style.

Today, we’re answering the question “so what will you wear at my wedding?” because it’s good to know what to expect from your photographers, especially if you would prefer they not dress like Jake from State Farm.

Here’s an example of our wedding day style. This is something both of us would wear during a spring wedding in DC. Simple but elegant dresses, pretty soft sole flats, nice coats in case the temperature drops, watches because we always know what time it is, simple and pretty earrings that won’t get caught on our camera straps, cell phones to keep track of the timeline and event schedules, and of course our camera bags and equipment. We also throw some cute “reception flats” into our bags for when the pointed toe shoes start to kill our feet. After the cake cutting, we usually jump into ballet flats so we can keep up with the dance floor!

At the studio, when we’re scheduled to meet with new couples, other wedding vendors, or during a boudoir session you’ll see us in something like this. Tailored jeans and flowing blouses, a casual dress and cardigan, easy jewelry and accessories and our everyday purses.

On an engagement session, we go a little more casual so we can relax with our couples. Not to mention, we’re very often balancing on rocks, standing on a beach, or walking up and down the streets of DC for our engagement sessions.

So there you have it! A look into our personal styles, and what we typically wear on different days in our life as photographers!
